Maths:
Today we began working on Math centres. We did two 20 minute rotations. AMA the centres my group did! Our goals for this week are to continue sharing and learning about mental math strategies for multiplication facts up to 9x9, exploring the link between multiplication and division, and reviewing the standard algorithm for 2 by 1 and 2 by 2 digit multiplication. We approach these topics through games, work in the textbook, and small group instruction with the teacher. Social Studies: This week we are beginning our research project on Canadian regions. AMA the region I will be comparing to the Interior Plains. Journée spéciale lundi!
Students worked hard the last 2 months to fill up the French bean jar by speaking French in class! Monday will be une journée de pyjama! :D Photo Retakes Monday is Photo Retake Day Maths: AMA "la crise mathématique" (jumbled multiplication tables). AMA "le facteur caché" game. Sciences:
Today we tested various materials to see if they would complete an electrical circuit. - Which materials were conductors (conducteurs) and which were insulators (isolants)? - Is a pencil a conductor, insulator, or both? Explain. Health: Constable Steve Ross was invited into our classroom today to lead an activity on community. Through discussion and an art activity, we brainstormed the tools we possess as classmates and community members that we can use to help others in need. - What are some of the tools I have as a student? - To help someone who is feeling down I could / I will ... Maths:
Today we learned a finger strategy to use when multiplying factors between 6 and 10. Try it with: - 6 x 7 - 8 x 8 - 7 x 9 Pièce de théâtre: Presentations tomorrow and Friday. Do I need to review my lines? Do I need to bring any props or costume pieces from home? Remembrance Day Assembly: Today was our first song practice in the gym with the other Grade 5 classes. What were our goals for the practice? What would we like to improve before our next rehearsal on Nov. 5? Halloween Candy: M. Trevor will be collecting donations of Halloween candy this week and next for the I Can for Kids charity. If you're willing to donate 10 pieces of candy (or more!) please bring them in a clear bag to school. More information about the charity here: https://www.icanforkids.ca/ Merci! Halloween:
Students may wear a costume if they wish. However, it will be a normal day of learning, so please keep that in mind when deciding how to dress! Students who don't want to wear a costume can wear pyjamas of they'd prefer :) Social Studies: Today we began working on our slide for Remembrance Day by researching a Canadian who participated in a war or peacekeeping mission throughout our history. Ask me to show you what our group did today on Google Drive. Math: Today we learned and practiced the strategy of halves and doubles for multiplication. For example, 12 x 5 can become (6 x 5) + (6 x 5). Try it: - 8 x 7 - 14 x 3 Maths:
Math quiz re-dos were sent home today. Please look over them with your child, correct any "stars" together, and return the signed quiz by Friday. Merci! Today we began our multiplication unit. By the end of Grade 5, students are expected to have their multiplication facts up to 9x9 memorized! During our Number Talk today, students shared their preferred strategies for practicing math facts. - AMA filling out our multiplication table to 12x12. What patterns did I notice? - AMA the finger strategy for multiplying by 9 - Which is my favourite strategy for 4 x 5? 6 x 7? Lest We Forget: As we begin our mini-research projects on Canadian soldiers throughout time, today we welcomed a guest presenter from the Calgary Public Library. Mme Christine shared the story of a young soldier from Calgary (via Belfast) who served during World War I. She explained how she was able to find records and photographs by doing some online sleuthing. This week, we will be doing some research of our own. Chanson:
We started learning the lines of our Remembrance Day song: L'enfant et l'oiseau. The lyrics and link to the karaoke track are in the Mme Kate Google Drive folder. FLA Pièce de théâtre: Presentations will start next week. We will be making a presentation schedule on Monday. AMA what my group's next steps are before we are ready to perform. Remembrance Day Assembly:
On Friday, November 9 all Grade 5 classes will be presenting at the Remembrance Day assembly. We were wondering if anyone from Rm. 19 has a family member who has been to war, on a peace-keeping mission or has participated in a war effort in any way. If you would be willing to share photos and/or stories, that would be great! Please email me any information you wish to share: [email protected] Art: In art, we started learning about perspective. We started making "vanishing letters" using the concept of a horizon line and a vanishing point. Sciences: Today we made a circuit with a switch. Here are some questions students came up with: - What materials did you use to make the switch? - Did your switch work? Did you have to make any adjustments? - How does a switch work? (open/closed circuits) - En français, "switch" veut dire interrupteur. Comment est-ce qu'un interrupteur interrompt le flux d'électricité? / How does a switch interrupt the flow of electricity? Hi parents,
This year, in order to save paper I won't be sending home Scholastic booklets. However, there is an easy-to-use website where you can place orders online and have them delivered to Varsity Acres, as per usual! Just follow the link below, and follow the instructions to be matched up with Rm. 19. https://canadaclubs.scholastic.ca/en/parent-account-creation At the end of every month I will place the orders. This month, I'll be placing the orders on Friday, October 26. Thanks for your understanding! Mme. Kate MacLachlan Maths:
Estimation quiz coming home today! Please look over corrections with your child, sign the quiz, and return it to school by Thursday. If your child would like to re-write the quiz, they may do so on Wednesday, October 24. This week in Math we will be reviewing rounding, multi-digit addition and subtraction with regrouping, and problem solving. Next week we will be moving into multiplication. Oral French: Today, students began keeping track of their effort speaking French in class. Every morning and afternoon they will give themselves a mark of 1 to 4. Together as a class we came up with a description for each grade. Students will take a picture of their progress at the end of each week and put it in their Google Drive to be able to share their progress with you at home :) |
